Northern Utah State Veterans Nursing Home, Ogden Utah

The VA Nursing Home in Ogden, named for George E. Wahlen, was newly constructed in 2009. Mia Holden contributed to the design during her time at a previous firm, assisting with finish selections and shaping the overall interior design concept. The building, completed in a Craftsman style, features light fixtures, fabrics, and furniture chosen to reflect the aesthetic while creating a cohesive, welcoming environment.

Special attention was given to fabrics, balancing durability with comfort for residents. Colors were selected to be pleasing to older eyes, and high-performance fabrics were used to withstand years of use in high-traffic areas. Yellow-tinted glasses were utilized during selection to simulate how colors would appear to older patrons, ensuring optimal visibility and warmth. Materials and finishes were designed to create a sense of home, while high-performance fabrics allow for cleaning and restoration to maintain the interiors’ long-term beauty.

Each of the four wings features a primary color to aid wayfinding, applied thoughtfully and tastefully, with the overall palette coordinated to support a harmonious and comforting environment.
