Payson, Utah Temple

While working at a previous firm, Mia Holden contributed to the interior design of the Payson Utah Temple, a building inspired by Utah’s Pioneer Heritage. Located along the I-15 corridor, the design drew from research on other pioneer-era temples as well as the furniture and decorative traditions brought to the Salt Lake Valley by early settlers. The interior furniture blends George IV and Sheraton styles, while antique and reproduction pieces further reinforce the connection to pioneer craftsmanship.

The “delectable mountain quilt” motif appears throughout the temple, reflecting the handmade quilts of pioneer families, and a ribbon motif is incorporated in the windows, rugs, and stone floor patterns, evoking the delicate handiwork of early settlers. Rugs in the main waiting areas were inspired by historic bed coverlet patterns, featuring repeating pumpkin seed flowers that recall embroidery and handcrafted textiles. Fabric and rug selections were made with great care to honor the warmth and artistry of pioneer handicrafts.

Local influences are also celebrated in the design: apple orchards in the region inspired the apple blossom motif, which appears in decorative paint details and hardware. Together, these thoughtfully selected elements create an interior that reflects both the history and the spirit of the Payson community while providing a warm, inviting, and meaningful environment for visitors.
